This was my first sampler, taken from the book Quilt yourself Gorgeous by Mandy Shaw. Each section of the sampler allowed me to practise my techniques and learn new skills. I embellished the appliquéd heart squares across the top with buttons and embroidered them with key family dates. The sunshine has little red prairie points which meet the embroidered rays. The foundation pieced flying geese fly down the left-hand side while the folded flying geese fly beneath the stars on which I embroidered our wedding anniversary. On the original pattern, the central building was a school, but I adapted it to represent our home with a ricrac edged roof for fun. The foundation pieced trees in the garden grow well with the pinwheel block flowers in the flower beds. Foundation piecing is a bit like rubbing your tummy while patting your head when you start but the technique allows you to piece quite complicated blocks and angles so I’m glad I persevered. I used up all my scraps piecing the border, and have convinced myself that the slightly distorted look is all part of the charm.
